About Cara

Cara Cowan is a 6th generation Rogers County resident.

Cara and DougCara was married on November 19th, 2005 to Doug Watts.  Her husband is a Wyandotte Nation citizen by his father and descended from the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon by his mother. Doug is the son of Walter and Mary Watts of Tulsa and Clara Rife of Tulsa.

He is owner and CEO of Tulsa Pier Drilling, Inc. which provides foundation piering solutions for new, larger construction projects.  Doug has owned and operated Tulsa Pier Drilling since 1996.  He is a 1989 graduate of East Central High School in Tulsa.

Cara's Mom and DadCara’s parents are Beverly (Leerskov) and Clarence “Curly” Cowan who met while her father was teaching at Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA) in Claremore.  They are both retired Oklahoma teachers.  Her mother has taught K-12 Learning Disabilities and Special Education for more than 30 years.  Her father taught College Math for more than 30 years and retired from Seminole State College.  Her brother, Brett Cowan, is a Civil Engineer at the Army Corp of Engineers in Tulsa, OK in addition to graduating with his PhD in Civil Engineering at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater in May 2007.  Another recent addition to the family is Cara's sister-in-law, Debbie Cowan.

Luella and Bob LeerskovCowan’s maternal grandparents are the late Luella and Bob Leerskov of Claremore.  Cara is a direct descendent of Tiawah resident Dempsey Fields Coker, Councilor and Solicitor for Cooweescoowee District in the late 1870s.  On her grandfather’s side, Cara is of the Tiawah Leerskov and undocumented Cluck Cherokee families.

Some of Cara's Rogers County family includes Imogene (Coker King) and Alf Crutchfield of Claremore, Flora Belle (Cluck Leerskov) DeLozier of Oologah and Yvonne Barkley-Stout of Inola.

Cowan’s paternal grandparents are Clara and the late Walter Cowan of Sallisaw. They are undocumented Cherokee and Choctaw from the Sallisaw and Fort Coffee communities in Oklahoma.
